The Australian Department of Home Affairs has confirmed that core eligibility requirements for the Student visa (Subclass 500) continue to apply without change for applications lodged in 2026, according to current official guidance.
As of 7 January 2026, the Department has not announced any amendments to key assessment criteria, including:
- Genuine Student (GS) requirement
- Financial capacity evidence to cover tuition fees and living costs
- English language proficiency standards as specified by visa conditions
- Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) requirements
The confirmation applies to international students enrolling across higher education, vocational education and training (VET), schools, and English language programs. The Department has clarified that reports suggesting new restrictions or revised eligibility rules for 2026 are not supported by official announcements.
Visa conditions related to work rights, course progress, and enrolment compliance also remain unchanged unless formally notified through official channels.
