IELTS Goes Fully Digital by Mid-2026; Duolingo Still Not Accepted for UK Student Visa

A major shift is coming in the English language testing landscape. According to recent updates from IDP IELTS and global education sources, IELTS is set to phase out paper-based exams by mid-2026, transitioning almost entirely to a computer-delivered format across most countries.

This move is aimed at improving test accessibility, faster result delivery, and a more streamlined experience for students worldwide.

💻 What’s Changing in IELTS?

1. Computer-Based Testing Becomes Standard

IELTS will primarily be conducted on computers, making the test more efficient and widely available.

2. Faster Results

Students can expect results typically within 1–3 days, compared to longer wait times for paper-based exams.

3. Limited Paper Option Available

A “Writing on Paper” option may still be available in select locations for students who prefer handwriting, but full paper-based tests will largely be discontinued.

⚠️ Important Update for UK Aspirants

While many universities worldwide are becoming flexible with English test options, a critical rule remains unchanged:

👉 Duolingo English Test is NOT accepted for UK student visa applications.

Even if a UK university accepts Duolingo for academic admission, students must still submit a Secure English Language Test (SELT) for visa purposes.

✅ Accepted Test for UK Visa:

  • IELTS for UKVI (Academic)
  • Other approved SELT exams (as per UK Home Office guidelines)

🍁 What About Canada?

Canada continues to show flexibility:

  • Duolingo English Test is accepted by many Canadian institutions
  • It can also be used for study permit applications in certain cases (depending on institution and requirements)

🎯 What Students Should Do

  • Book IELTS (Computer-Based) early to secure preferred dates
  • Choose IELTS UKVI if planning to study in the UK
  • Verify test requirements for both university admission and visa
  • Avoid confusion between academic acceptance and visa requirements
