Category-based draws now dominate. General-stream Indian applicants are being left out of Invitation to Apply (ITA) rounds.
Healthcare workers — favouredSTEM professionals — favouredSkilled trades — favouredGeneral stream — fewer ITAs
What this means for Indian students
- UK job search window shrinks: 6 fewer months to find a sponsored role means students must start applying for jobs earlier — ideally before graduation.
- UK course selection matters more: Students should choose programmes aligned with UK Shortage Occupation List roles to convert to a skilled worker visa faster.
- Canada PR path narrows for general applicants: Without a STEM, healthcare, or trades profile, CRS scores alone may not be enough to receive an ITA in Canada's new draw system.
- Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs) gain importance: For students outside priority categories, provincial pathways like Ontario and BC PNP may be more viable than federal Express Entry draws.
EthicalEdu advisory for UK & Canada aspirants
- UK aspirants: choose your course with post-study employment in mind — not just university ranking
- Begin UK job applications in your final semester, not after graduation
- Canada aspirants: assess your NOC code — if it falls outside healthcare/STEM/trades, explore PNP routes with us
- Build French language skills for additional Canada immigration advantage (FSW + Quebec streams)

The UK's Graduate visa reduction is a significant blow to Indian students who relied on the 2-year window to find employer sponsorship. Six months may not sound like much, but in a competitive UK job market where visa sponsorship is already hard to secure, this tightening meaningfully reduces the buffer time. For Canada, the shift to category-based Express Entry draws is essentially a skills filter — if your profile doesn't align with healthcare, STEM, or skilled trades, you may sit in the Express Entry pool indefinitely without ever receiving an invitation.
