UK Hikes Student Visa Fees & Raises English Proficiency Bar
The UK has introduced significant changes to its student visa process in 2026. From April 8, 2026, the student visa fee has increased to £558, up from approximately £490, adding to the overall cost of studying in the UK.
In addition, from January 2026, all applicants must now demonstrate CEFR B2-level English proficiency, replacing the earlier B1 requirement. This means students must show a higher level of fluency in reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
What This Means for Indian Students
- Higher financial planning required due to increased visa costs
- Stronger English proficiency needed (higher IELTS/PTE scores)
- More emphasis on academic readiness and communication skills
