Everything students and professionals need to know about B1/B2, F1/F2, H1B, and H4 visa slots — including the real wait times nobody warns you about.

If you've recently tried to book a US visa appointment, you already know the feeling: you open the scheduling portal, check your preferred consulate, and stare at a calendar full of unavailable dates stretching months — sometimes over a year — into the future.

You're not alone. Across India and many other countries, US visa appointment slots have become one of the most competitive bookings in the world. And if you don't plan ahead, you could miss a university admission, a job start date, or a critical business trip.

This guide breaks down what's happening with US visa appointments in 2026 — by visa type — and what you can actually do about it.

Why Are US Visa Appointments So Hard to Get?

The short answer: demand is enormous, and supply hasn't kept up.

US embassies are still working through a massive backlog that built up during the pandemic, while application volumes have rebounded to record highs. India alone accounts for one of the largest pools of US visa applicants in the world — spanning students, IT professionals, business travelers, and families — and the consulates in Chennai, Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, and Kolkata are all feeling the pressure.

Add to this a policy change introduced in January 2025: applicants in India are now only allowed to reschedule their appointment once without repaying the visa application fee. A second reschedule requires paying the MRV fee again. This has made slot planning even more stressful.

B1/B2 Visa — The Long Wait for Business and Tourist Visitors

The B1/B2 visa covers both business travel (B1) and tourism or family visits (B2). It's one of the most commonly applied-for US visas — and unfortunately, it currently has the longest appointment wait times.

As of early 2026, here's what applicants in India are looking at:

  • Chennai — approximately 12–14 months
  • Mumbai — approximately 9–10 months
  • New Delhi — approximately 7–9 months
  • Hyderabad — approximately 6–8 months
  • Kolkata — approximately 5–7 months

Yes, you read that right. If you apply for a B1/B2 visa today in Chennai, your interview appointment could be over a year away.

What this means for you: If you're planning a US trip for a family reunion, a business conference, or a holiday, you need to start the process now — not a month before your planned travel date. Ideally, apply 12–18 months in advance if you're in a high-demand city.

One silver lining: the B1/B2 visa, once granted, is typically issued for 10 years with multiple entries. So the wait is painful, but you'll have long-term access once it's done.

F1/F2 Visa — Students Get Priority, But It's Still a Race

The F1 visa is for international students admitted to a US university or college, and the F2 visa covers their dependents (spouse and children).

Good news: US consulates do prioritize student visa applicants, especially during peak admission seasons (May–August for fall semester). The F1 visa typically has shorter wait times compared to B1/B2:

  • Average wait time in India: 4–10 weeks, depending on the consulate and time of year
  • Peak season (May–August): Can stretch to 10–14 weeks, so early action is essential

There's an important rule to keep in mind: you cannot attend your F1 visa interview more than 120 days before your program start date, but you also cannot enter the US more than 30 days before your course begins. Timing your application correctly within this window is crucial.

F2 dependents apply alongside or after the F1 holder and follow a similar process, though both applications must be coordinated carefully.

What this means for you: If you have an I-20 (admission letter) in hand, don't wait. Book your appointment the same week you receive it. The earlier you apply within the allowed window, the more appointment slot options you'll have.

H1B Visa — Work Visa Appointments Are in a Crisis of Their Own

The H1B visa is for skilled foreign workers in specialty occupations — think software engineers, data scientists, consultants, healthcare professionals, and more. If you're applying from India after receiving an H1B petition approval (Form I-797), you'll need to schedule a consular interview for visa stamping.

Here's the reality check no one wants to hear: as of early 2026, all five US consulates in India — Chennai, Mumbai, New Delhi, Hyderabad, and Kolkata — are showing "Not Available" for H-category visa appointments through the end of 2026. The earliest slots currently appearing are in May 2027.

That's not a glitch. That's the actual state of the backlog.

What this means in practical terms:

  • If your H1B was approved and you're waiting to get stamped, you could be looking at a 12–16 month wait from today
  • Many applicants are now exploring third-country stamping — scheduling their interview at a US consulate in Canada, Mexico, or another country — to access earlier slots. This works, but comes with travel costs, logistics, and its own risks
  • Applicants already in the US on a valid H1B can sometimes extend or change employers without needing to travel for stamping — worth discussing with an immigration advisor

This is arguably the most difficult visa category to navigate right now, and acting early — ideally the moment your I-797 approval arrives — is no longer just good advice. It's essential.

H4 Visa — Dependent Spouses Are Caught in the Same Storm

The H4 visa is for spouses and children of H1B holders, and it's often treated as an afterthought in the planning process — which is a costly mistake.

Since H4 appointments fall under the same H-category as H1B, they face the same "Not Available" situation at all Indian consulates through 2026. This means families are being separated for over a year while waiting for slots — a reality that is deeply stressful and often underestimated when people first start the visa process.

A few things to keep in mind:

  • H4 and H1B appointments can be booked simultaneously at the same consulate and should be — don't stagger them if you can help it
  • If the H1B holder is considering third-country stamping, the H4 applicant should ideally travel and apply at the same time to avoid a second trip
  • Start the H4 process the moment the H1B approval (I-797) is received — not after the H1B stamping is done

Practical Tips for Booking Your US Visa Appointment

Here are a few things that genuinely help:

1. Book early, always. This one cannot be overstated. The moment you have your petition approval, I-20, or business travel date confirmed — open the appointment portal immediately.

2. Be flexible with your consulate. If Delhi has a 9-month wait but Kolkata has 5 months, and you're willing to travel, that flexibility can save you months of waiting.

3. Check for cancellation slots. Appointment slots open up frequently due to cancellations. Using slot-tracking tools or checking the portal during off-peak hours (early morning, late evening) can help you snag a closer date.

4. Prepare your documents in advance. Don't let document preparation delay your interview once you have a slot. Have your DS-160, passport, financial documents, and supporting paperwork ready before the appointment date.

5. Get professional guidance if you're unsure. The visa process has a lot of moving parts — from filling the DS-160 correctly to understanding what the consular officer may ask. A small mistake can lead to delays or refusals that are entirely avoidable.
